Week 1 session 1:
In this first lecture back after the break, we were introduced to the concept of visual rethorics including:
- juxtapositon
-subvertion
-parody
-hommage
-satire and pastiche
in a class exercise ( in small groups ) we got given a set of images. We had to identify the Ihi and Wehi of each image before presenting our findings to the rest of the class. ( the best example from the set I was given was the Macdonald satire/subvertion "there is a Little M in everyone", the poster was about obesity, the back of an obese person is visible and does not fully fit in the poster, the quote used in the poster had also a dark twist to it, making the audience smile and think of it as funny but also a little bit disturbing, uncomfortable and maybe also even sad when the obsese person is compared to the person ( at the back of the poster ) jumping and looking reasonably fit and enjoying life while the person in the foreground just stands there, out of the fun, just watching it happening. )
After this exercise we were splitted into groups for Thursday's debate. My group has to debate inequality in New Zealand. I am going to look into Gender inequality in New Zealand at first and then further concentrate on the LGBT community, unless I come accross an important issue while doing my research. I will then share my research with my group wednesday afternoon, where we will decide on the speakers and main key points to debate.
